Čeřeniště

The following text is taken from the document "Notes on the Design of the Municipal Coat of Arms and Flag," prepared for the municipality of Malečov in 2020 by Stanislav Kasík for the Heraldic Office "Dauphin" in Roudnice nad Labem. Published with the permission of the author and the municipality of Malečov.

The first mention of Čeřeniště in historical written sources comes from an entry in the erection books kept by the Prague Archbishopric on donations and gifts to churches and church institutions. The entry is dated July 9, 1407, and it shows that the Church of St. Lawrence in Litoměřice was given a yearly salary of one kopeck and four groschen for a dowry by the widow Katherine, insured in Keblany and Tomek in Čeřeniště ("in Czerzenicz"; Libri erectionum archidioecensis Pragensis saeculo XIV. et XV. Liber V. /1398-1407/, Pragae 1889, p. 745, No. 1025).

In the mid-16th century, the village belonged to the fortress in Píšťany, which was held by the town of Litoměřice. In 1547, the property of participants in the anti-Habsburg uprising was confiscated. Litoměřice lost a large number of estates, which were then administered by the Bohemian Chamber. In 1550, Oldřich Dubanský of Dubany and Liběšice bought Píšťany, but in 1558, he sold the village along with the fortress to the municipality of Litoměřice.

In 1787, Čeřeniště was an independent farm ("Gut Cžernischt oder Cžersing"), which first belonged to the Minorite Monastery in Litoměřice. After its dissolution during the reign of Emperor Joseph II, the estate fell to the town of Litoměřice and was administered by the Bohemian Chamber. At that time, the village had 44 houses (Schaller, V., 1787, p. 58).

In 1833, the village of Čeřeniště ("Tschersing", "Tschernischt", "Čersing", "Černischt") belonged to the farm Keblice ("Gut Keblitz"), which was the property of the Royal Regional Town of Litoměřice. The village consisted of 52 houses with 297 inhabitants. Of these, 41 houses with 233 inhabitants belonged to the Keblice farmstead, and 11 houses formed the Čeřeniště farmstead. The village was annexed to Církvice (Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary; Sommer, I., 1833, p. 21).

In 1848, the village of Čeřeniště ("Tschersing") was owned by the town of Litoměřice. The village consisted of 54 houses and 344 inhabitants of German nationality (Palacký, Description, 1848, p. 42).

In 1890, Čeřeniště had 65 houses and 314 inhabitants of German nationality. A solitary settlement named Vimperk belonged to the village. The village was annexed to Církvice (Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary) and belonged to the governorate and political district of Litoměřice (OSN VI., 1893, p. 594).

The name Čeřeniště is derived from the root word "čeřen", which has several meanings. For example, a forest on the Ledeč estate bore the name Čeřeniště. A "čeřen" is a net with four rods and a handle used for catching smaller fish. Words ending in "-iště" were originally denominatives, denoting a place for a specific thing, such as a fireplace (ohniště) or a garbage dump (smetiště). Based on this pattern, words like "hunting ground" (loviště), "training ground" (cvičiště), and "maze" (bludiště) were formed. The verb "čeřeniti" meant "to stir up" or "to ripple". Therefore, the word "čeřeniště" could have meant "a place for nets" or "a place where rippling or stirring occurs" (Profous, I., 1954, p. 317).
