Description
The sandstone cross stands by the road from Horní Zálezel towards Proboštov. It dates from 1831 and was made by an unknown artist. The stone cross is located on top of a prismatic column with christological reliefs. The monument is set on a square base plate. The back side is smooth, without embossed decoration. The lower part of the plinth is more massive than the shank itself, the upper edge is rounded and decorated with a band of embossed arches. On three sides of this part there are mirrors with inscriptions. On the sides there are rectangular mirrors with cut-out corners. On the front side is a more complex mirror whose side lines are taken from the shape of a quadrilobe, the upper and lower lines are straight; the inner circumference is highlighted with scalloped tape. In the centre of the mirror there is an engraved torsional fraktur German inscription from the dating. The central, somewhat subtler prismatic part of the shank is decorated on three sides with reliefs in rectangular fields, topped by a semicircle. On the right side there is a relief with the theme of Christ being laid in the tomb. On the front side is a relief with the theme of Christ's baptism and on the left side is the motif of Christ praying under a tree in the Garden of Gethsemane with the trio of sleeping apostles in the background. The reliefs in the central and upper part of the plinth are separated by a profiled cornice. In the upper part of the plinth there are the same rectangular fields on three sides. On the right side is a relief with the theme of the Resurrection, with Christ hovering over an open tomb with astonished soldiers at his sides. The Virgin Mary Help of Christians is depicted in the field on the front. On the left side there is a relief with the motif of Ecce Homo with a tortured seated Christ with bound hands and a reed. Below each relief is a fractural torsional engraved inscription. The shaft is topped with a massive profiled cornice with massive semicircular arches on each of the three sides. On the front side there is a relief of a figure of the Risen Christ with a triangle with the divine eye, symbolising the Holy Trinity, in an arch in the blind arcade. On top of the divine torment is a cross carried by tiny figures of little angels. The cross has a simple form of a Latin cross.
Description of heritage value
The Baroque cross with reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Christ is a reflection of the folk, still influenced by the echoes of late Baroque regional stone production and at the same time the deep piety of the founder. The monument is also an interesting landscape element.
