Anotation

The life-size sandstone statue from the middle of the 18th century is built on a prismatic stepped plinth. The figure of the saint is conceived in the traditional iconographic concept.

Agencies

Socha St. Jan Nepomucký is located by the bridge in the lower part of the village. The statue dates from the mid-18th century and in 1852, according to the date on the pedestal, it was repaired.

Description

Socha St. The statue of St. John of Nepomuk is located by the bridge at the edge of the road and was made by an unknown author. It is surrounded by greenery. It is placed on a pedestal, which consists of its parts. The lowermost part is in the shape of a cube, which ends in a concave part with a profiled head decorated around the perimeter on three sides with a band with a leaf relief. On the front side of the block is the engraved date 1852 in an engraved mirror with cut-out corners. The central part of the base - the shank - is twice concave and decorated with volutes in the centre. This shaft is topped with a simple profiled head in whose soffit the embossed leaf perimeter band is repeated. The statue of the saint stands on a low plinth. The figure of the saint is standing in a contrapposto with his left leg slightly bent. He holds a crucifix in his arms, which he rests on his left shoulder, and his left hand is resting on the cross. In his right hand, which holds the crucifix, he also holds a palm branch. Around his head is a circular halo with five six-pointed stars. He wears a biretta on his head, from under which his wavy hair extends to his ears. A short beard with a moustache frames the face. The saint has an almure thrown over his shoulders, the fabric of which is gathered at the elbows and modelled with distinctive folds. The bottom hem is decorated with tassels. It is extended in the back. Under the almuce is a rochet with decorative sleeve hems and bottom hem, with a floral pattern. The lower garment, the clerica, falls flowingly on the plintus. The toes of the saint's shoes protrude from beneath the garment.

Description of heritage value

Socha St. John of Nepomuk is a testament to the local cult of respect for this saint with a distinctive placement on the bridge (a link to the legend of the saint's death when he was thrown from the Charles Bridge into the Vltava River). The statue is a testament to the level of local stone production and also a complement to the village's intravillán.

Material

Medium-grained sandstone with ferruginous admixtures.

Justification of monument protection
Reference to literature
State of conservation of the monument, proposals for measures, if any

Taken from the 2003 NPS record sheet.Year 1999

Socha shows no static disturbances. The condition of the stone is relatively good. However, in the places where the rainwater runs off, especially under the saint's right hand, there is surface destruction of the stone mass. A considerable amount of small mechanical abrasions, especially in the area of the spine. Minor decorative details have been wiped off. The head of a saint is missing. Remains of polychromy - especially the saint's vestments. The monument is covered in places with micro-vegetation, mainly mosses and lichens.

Year 2000

Restoration of the sculpture, addition of the head.

Years 2023 and 2024

The Malečovský rozhled Association, in cooperation with the municipality of Malečov and the Roman Catholic parish of Proboštov, is responsible for the overall renovation of the statue. See Renovation.
