Description
In the inventory of religious statues of the Proboštov FÚ (see the translation in the section "History") the following description is given for this cross, unless the hypothesis expressed at the end of the following paragraph is valid: "On a sandstone column stands an iron cross with a crucifix made of sheet metal, next to the cross are two paintings of Mary and Magdalene made of sheet metal. Established in 1834 to replace the collapsed wooden cross." The results of the investigation by Jiří Belis (Museum of the City of Ústí nad Labem) on 10. 11. 2024:The sandstone column is 233 cm high above ground. It is embedded in the ground and covered with stones. The diameter of the top part is 30 cm, at the base the column has a diameter of 38 cm. A relatively long subtle spike of square cross-section 2 x 2 cm in length 6,5 cm protrudes from the top. If this should be the lower part of the cross, there should already be a noticeable transition to the flat part at the length of the thorn. So it could be more likely a mandrel for the base head. However, it would have to be relatively high to accommodate the cross thorn or the cross would have to stand on a tripod or bipod. The column itself is quite subtle for its visible height and diameter. The sandstone was undoubtedly "repaired" by pumelling. It can be seen that the column was either deeply damaged or made in a way other than by machining on a recumbent bench, where the stone is clamped between two mandrels and the surface is machined by simultaneous rotation, making it easier to achieve a regular circular cross-section. Below the top edge of the column, at a distance of 37 cm, is a piece of flat iron (2 x 1 cm), bent downwards. It offers several explanations. It could have been the support strut of the cross, which someone broke off while bending its end, or it could have been the handle of the eternal light, or there is another possibility. There is also a suggestion (unlikely) that the column could have come from another place and even as a supporting part, due to the iron pieces protruding from it, of a building.
